Panasonic TU-HDS20

Picked up a TU-HDS20 for $299. It was an open box and my dealer has ordered the manual and remote (no charge) for me. Turned off the SAT portion and am using only for local. Did all the setups using the front panel of the unit. I was told that without the remote I cannot switch to HD. Is there a way without the remote? I cannot find it on the front panel or the menus. I'm getting good picture quality from the HD stations out of the S-Video but get distortion or nothing out of the component connections (remote again).

Guess I should be patient until the remote arrives?

I got impatient waiting for the new STB's and thought I just do locals for now. If the TU-HDS20 doesn't work out they'll take it back without a problem. Good dealer.

Thanks,
Lee

Lee, I don't know what you're getting via S-Video, but it is not HD. You need component video cables connected to get HD.

I have a component cable between the STB and the set, I also have an S-video between them. The STB says 480i. The component and S-video are on different inputs to the TV. When I select the S-video input to the TV I get video. When I select the component input (HD2) I get distortion or nothing. I tried cycling the STB through its outputs. 480i/p 720p 1080i. The guys at the store I've known for over 10 years and I should trust them when they say it won't switch on the component output without the remote. I was hoping there was another way.

Not so patient I guess,
Lee

Took the Panasonic back and they gave me a Toshiba unit to use while I'm (patienty) waiting on DISH/DTV/CABLE to get HDTV figured out. All is well in the world, what a difference! Good menus, easy to use/navigate. Getting 100% on 6 of the locals with an attic antenna. No signal on the other two but antennaweb.org says those two are under review (new). Again, I'm just using it for locals.

I have a love/hate relationship with this receiver, I use it for DirecTV and OTA signals. I always just leave the front panel selector on "Native," that way it just picks the best resolution, screen size, everything for you. It has plenty of inputs/outputs for component, rgb, rca, satellite, digital fiber optic audio, antenna etc too. It is a very "smart" receiver in my opinion, but because of this... it always seems to be "thinking" and it's menu's, channel surfing, etc. are very slow. I push a button on my remote, and there are times when there is a 5 second delay before the receiver does something. I've called up Panasonic about this to see if there was a software or hardware upgrade to speed it up, but they told me I have the latest versions (8.1?? I think).

Not sure, without checking out Panasonic's website, if there's a new model coming out, but I'd keep an eye out for it if it does... if they make those improvements... I'd be tempted to buy it.
