is the picture bad without HD signal?
I'm considering buying the Sony 42" KP-43HT20 high definition wide screen. I've been told that the HD broadcasts are great but if you're watching regular tv (especially sports) using Directv signal, that the picture is actually very blurry. Does anyone out there have this problem? I'm not real interested in watching DVD's or HDTV broadcasts (at least not now) I just want to watch my shows & sports on a big screen. Any advice on whether I should get this tv?

For about a third of the price you can buy an analog big screen from somewhere. If all you wanted to do was watch analog sports- No DVD's,HD(even though it is a safe bet that yours shows are in HD) then get a old TV. Picture quality of analog programming on a HD-ready tv can be poor.

pm, welcome to the forum.
The main reason people are disappointed with the standard def. picture quality on an HDTV, is because they have likely moved up a lot in screen size. If you move from a 27 to a 53" TV, you have increased the screen size by a factor of 4. This means that any imperfections will be more visible, like holding a magnifying glass to a newspaper. If you are not increasing screen size by a great deal, then the "upconversion" that the HDTVs do, will likely provide you with a satisfactory picture. You are looking at a 42" TV and these provide some of the finest pictures available. People usually complain when they get a 65"... Find a retailer that has SD signals fed to a properly set up HDTV and look at it from the same distance you would at home.
