I'm still relatively new here, but I've been curious about the practice of buying big ticket items like HDTV's from reatailers online. I've checked out a few and see the prices are remarkably lower than in stores like Sears, Best Buy or Circuit City.
But is it really safe to buy online? Are such establishments reliable and repubable? What are shipping arrangements like? What can one do if problems arise with the item you purchase? What if you don't have credit cards to place orders with as is the case with me? Any answers you good folks can provide on this topic would be most helpful. |

Many have had good experiences with on-line big ticket items. I bought a Ford Bronco (full size) off eBay. No problems with the sale. Check the seller to make sure they are reputable before ordering a TV.
Once you decide what you want, you can mail a couple money orders for the purchase.

Of course always know who you're doing business with, but I have not heard or read any horror stories of on-line buying. Places like Best Buy, Circuit City, Conns, Sears, etc...usually do have web-only specials and I have friends who have bought them on-line. It's made easier for some people now, at the bigger retail stores to buy an on-line special, and then just go pick up the item later that day if it's in stock. No delivery needed (avoid a delivery fee). Order on-line for an in store pickup.
As far as no credit card...I don't think you can make an on-line purchase without it or at least a debit card. |

Many thanks for the info! I'll do more research on retailers. A Bronco? Via eBay? Wow! That's incredible!

I was torn the same way you are about buying one on line but I finally broke down and did it. I didn't feel safe buying from somewhere that I've never heard of so It was a toss up between costco.com and crutchfield.com. Costco didn't offer any kind of warranty but I could return it to my local store if I had any trouble but they charged 200 dollars shipping which defeated the purpose of buying online. In the end I went with crutchfield becuase their 5 year service plan was cheaper than my local stores, they threw in a free $300 stand and offered free lifetime support via their toll free number. (Which has already been helpful) They also had free 5 day shipping. The delivery went smooth and as planned and with my service plan, I can rest easy for another 5 years.
Just do your homework on the store you order from, you don't want some fly by night operation that shuts down on you after you order. My rule of thumb was don't order a big ticket item from an online store unless they've been in business at least 5 years. Crtuchfield has been around for 30+ years so I felt comfortable. Make sure you feel comfortable |

Thanks for the tip on Crutchfield. I've heard of them! I'll check them out! Hopefully I'll finally be able to make up my mind by the end of the month as I'm eager to replace my set soon!

I bought my Tosh 46HM84 on Amazon. Great price, delivery went smooth - I would recommend them. I also bought my F-150 online via Carsdirect, who I would recommend for buying a new car if you are like me and do not want to deal w/ car salesman.
