Question JVC AV-48P575 Question

Hi guys first off I would like to say this is a fine site you are running here tons of useful info keep up the great work

now too the topic at hand I just bought a JVC AV-48P575 I have been google hunting for days with little to no luck on reviews of this model I found about 10 all are very positive with no bad comments

I was wondering if the HDTV GURUS have heard anything I need to be worried about

the reason I ask is I have not deiced on the extended warranty Future Shop wants 399.99 CDN for it for 5 years now I know there is allot of people who think these things are worth it and allot who don’t (including myself 99% of the time) but this is a big buy for me and seeing as I cant find any bad reviews I am thinking about not taking the warranty but wanted to check in here and see what you guys think or know about this model

Also this is my second Big Screen projection I have a RCA 46" non hi def projection I have read allot about burn in (IE game health meter) I have played PS2 on my old TV with no problems if I know it will be paused for a while I turn off the TV I have had this TV for 4 years with out a problem as long as I do the same with the new ones I should have no problems correct there is no need to be more concerned with a HDTV rear projection right ?

Thanks guys

Mind I ask what you think of the tv so far? My bro is thinking of getting but I told to hold off till I find some info on the tv. Not really finding any in depth reviews. Most user reviews are very positive but also very brief.

well so far I am very happy with it PQ is fantasic could sue more imputs but you can use both Svideo and component for the same imput and just turn off the one deivece you dont want displayed (ie comp is Svid full time then when I turn on the DVD on component it takes over

only thing I dont like about ti is its really REALLY senistive to movment even rolling it means I will have to touch up the 81 point convergence as it will be off a fair bit in the corners after the move

but other hten that I have seen no faults with it yet

I would say...first find out if the Future Shops maintenance plan covers cleanings, bulb replacement, software patch updates, etc. If so, then it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in the maintenance plan.

Hey. I forgot about this thread

My bro ended up buying the TV as well. So far he's very happy with it but there are some things that I notice that I wonder if you do as well...

Does it look blurry on the sides for you? No matter what video input is used, there is some blurriness on the sides. He notices it but it doesn't really bother him. It bothers me though as he spent quite a bit (for him anyway) and I want to make sure his TV setup to optimal settings. Is that something that needs to be configured?

And yeah, I know what you mean about the inputs. I had to order DVI cables (monoprice.com) for his cable box to free a component input for his DVD player.

You got me thinking about the extended warranty plan now too. How long are the bulbs supposed to last? And cleaning too?

yes mine is very bulry in th etop right cornner of the tv it Bugs the hell out of me I am planing on calling in there techs to take a look at it PW in the center is great but the top right cornner is way out of wack you can adjust the convergence enough to fix it either

I would deffinally go for warrenety 2 times already this unit has shut off for no reason and once the power light was flashign non stop and there was no way to turn the unit back on I had to unplug it and plug it back in not sure if the hassle is worth the PQ on this unit

oh and the convegence keeps drifting on me I have to touch it up every 5 or so days very annoying

hmm...I called JVC about the blurriness. They said someone from a service center come over to check out the TV for free since my bro just recently purchased the TV. Hopefully, the guy can fix the issue. You should check to see if you can do the same.

What's funny, though, is that my bro doesn't really notice anything but I do. I guess that's what is important but if it's a free service undere warranty then he might as well take advantage of it.

I just purchased and received this TV last week. I'm glad to have found others who have it. Overall I'm very happy with the set especially in HD. The first thing I notice about the set was that 1) the picture tilted noticably and 2) the upper right portion of the screen is blurry and has yellow tint. I fixed the tilt by going in to the service menu (which required me to use the remote from my other JVC tv) and adjusting the convergeance lines. This was a very time consuming process and I just about drove my wife crazy spending so much time trying to get all of the lines straight. Matching up the red and blue lines was a much quicker proposition especially with the convergence features that the service menu provides - they really should allow this functionality from within the normal menu. At this point I am satisfied with the shape of the picture. However there is still the blurriness problem that is almost exclusive to the upper right corner. It is really only noticable when the convergence pattern is up or with video games that have a status graphic in that area. Its not horrible or even unacceptable but I would like to know if it can be fixed. If it cannot it will certainly not be a deal breaker because I think the PQ is exceptional.

One other observation is that the autofocus on my unit does not do a good enough job. I am exclusively using manual convergence which is fine but I was hoping to not have to deal with that after my last rear projection set. I am also experiencing a drift in the convergeance but I'm pretty sure that it is normal during the first 100 hours or so that the tv is breaking in. At least I hope that is the case.

I'm very interested to hear if a technician is able to fix the problem that we all seem to be having.

glad ther eis another owner seening the same problem

as for the convergence I agree its only the top right corner its not really a problem for most usage only really games and channel logo's I can live with it the PQ every where else is on the TV is still shocking to me I stoped and watch some show about whales just because it was in HD and looks so sharp on the TV

as for the service menu I dont have any other JVC remotes so I will have to call the techs in to fix it as not being able to adjust it in that cornner is annoying

the Autofocus is a wasted effort I have yet to see a TV auto do a good job (I sell TV's) that being said joe blow tv consumer will not even notice but us tv Geeks its not acceptable I spend about 20 mins fine tunning it every week I cant stand it being out even a little bit

I as you hope the drifting is just a break in thing I have noticed it is starting to get better it lasts almost a full week and its onlly off a small bit but its still off

Thanks for the info I will give the techs a call I got the warranty might as well make use of it lol

Sokhar, is the top right corner slightly yellow along with being blurry on your set? Also, have you noticed the screen tilt that I mentioned?

well I only really notice the yellow in the convergence screen because of the contrast of black on white

my set is WAY out in that cornner the blue and red box almost is a double img and the whole corner looks like a white/yellow smudge

as far as tilt I dont notice it but sure I will now lol I will have a look but so far I have not noticed anythign

Thanks for the settings, I'll give them a try. I'm guessing that you also have VSM set to off?

Right now I've settled with these settings for regular (non HD) TV watching and gaming:
Tint = +4
Color = -7
Picture = 3
Bright = 7
Detail = -15
Temp Low
Noise = Off
VSM = Off

Your description fits exactly - the yellow tint is only noticable in the convergence screen. I'm still trying to schedule a tech to come look at theproblem but since I live in a rural area it might be a couple of weeks. Have you been able to nail down a time frame?

Well I finally got a technician to take a look at the tv yesterday. According to him the blurry spot in the upper right corner is not fixable and "is just the way these tvs are". He did give me some pointers within the service menu but overall it was a complete waste of time - especially since he messed up all of my hard work getting the convergence setup properly. I'm still happy with the tv but I've decided that this will most certainly be the last crt rptv that I ever buy.

Sokhar, those setting for theater mode really make a big difference. The only thing I had to adjust was the detail setting which I brought back to -10. It took me a while to get used to but it creates a much richer picture than before.

Look forward to hearing what your technician has to say.

I have been swamped with work and a new GF so I have not had time to call them in but I will post what they say when I get a chance to call them down.

ya I found the settings a bit odd at frist but this set had a real heavy green shade from the defaults I find its pretty ballanced now and its still nice and bright with out being in torch mode lol I am supprised you like the detail at -10 I put up with grainy SD channels becuse HD looks just right with the detail at +1 clean and sharp with out grain bu tdifferent strokes for differnt folks lol

I had to lower the detail since I don't have an HD receiver for my sattelite yet. I'm sure I'll be able to pump it back up when that happens. I'm still using the settings I posted above for gaming but for everything else I think your settings work out well. The one thing I've noticed is that the shadows are a little more washed out but I'm sure having an HD signal would clean that up.

ya I just finished watching the punisher in HD and the shadows are clean and sharp but I did noticed the black was a bit too black so I turned up the brightness +1 and seems to have cleared that up
