FIREWIRE (DTVLink/IEEE-1394) DISH NETWORK
Can't wait for the new JVC TU-PVR9000 for DISH network .... it will have 120 GB hard drive for PVR, HDTV recording, FIREWIRE (IEEE-1394/DTVLink), caller ID, and should be available by First Quarter 2003. Also, the ECHOSTAR (DISH NETWORK) PVR921 also for DISH Network ... coming out 2Q03 which will have a 200+ GB hard drive, DVI and FIREWIRE (IEEE-1394/DTVLink), & 2 tuners. Figure 1 GB/hour for standard recording and 6 GB/hour for HDTV recording ... both boxes will also be able to EXPORT a recorded show to a D-VHS VCR from Mits or JVC! DirecTV sucks and will ONLY allow DVI interface which will NOT let you record, ever. BOYCOTT DIRECTV ... tell them you have a RIGHT to timeshift your shows. Mitsubishi and JVC are the only ones who have got it right. Show them you care. Last edited by Eyedox : 11-25-2002 at 05:07 PM. |

Perhaps (sounds high), but if you recall, the JVC D-VHS machine was $2k about 1 year ago and it's now available for under $750.
I would guess that the Scientific Atlanta Cable HDDVR (SA8000HD) which will come out "soon" is going to be under $1k. The SA8000 (non HD) is about $600. The Sony Cocoon HDDVR, which is currently only available in Japan is about $1k. The Motorola cable HDDVR should also be way under $1k. One minor correction to the first post. It takes just under 9GB to record one hour of HD signals (at 19.4 Mb/s, which is normally used).

I have a question about the IEEE-1394. I keep seeing that the 1394 connection is for connection to a DVHS, so what I want to know is will I be able to use the 1394 connection to plug into my TV and watch programming or will I have to use a component video connection.?(I do not have DVI and I do not want it)

IF you have a STB with firewire out and IF you have an HDTV with firewire in, you can connect the two. There is currently a fairly limited selection of both, but more are coming.
