My TV Akai pt4799hd (samsung HC-p4741w) says selection unavailable when I attempt to change picture size during some DVDs. Other times it allows me to do it. Does it depend on the particular DVD ? Or DVD player/TV compatibility? Or is it my TV a hunk of junk?

I have been watching some DVDs on a Akai Pt4799hd and there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. So, to get rid of these, I try to use a different picture size, but when I try to, the TV says "selection unavailable" Is this right? Why would the TV have this feature only to tell me it is unavailable during a DVD. The P. size works fine when viewing cable TV broadcast (non-HD)

I am pretty sure the DVD player is not upconverting. It is Sony DVP-NS501 and does prog scan. It is hooked up with component cables and the progressive mode switched on. I looked in the manual for just that, but I couldn't find it. It just lists what to do if you're in 16:9 or 4:3 mode. No mention of what modes work with anything. It seems like it locks me out of changing the format. It is fixed on 16:9, maybe it has something to do with the prog scan??

I am pretty sure the DVD does not upconvert. It just does 480p. Maybe the TV is only able to stretch 480i. That would explain it. I wish there was a statement in the manual about it. It just shows the various stretch modes, but not what format it can do it in. I will try it with the prog scan turned off and see if I can stretch. That should pin it down to what you describe. Thanks!

I don't feel so bad now. For a while I thought something was wrong, but it is just my particular setup.
My DVD player can zoom too, but it leaves the stupid 2X, 4X plastered on the screen, because the zoom feature is supposed to be used for jpgs.
