Sony backs DVI

SONY LEAPS AHEAD ON SECURE DTV DISPLAYS WITH NEW DVI-HDTV INTERFACE ENABLED PRODUCTS PARK RIDGE, N.J., Feb. 20, 2002 - Sony Electronics today announced its support of Digital Visual Interface (DVI) with high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP) by unveiling 13 new Hi-Scan 1080i™ television sets and a prototype of a second-generation high-definition receiver. The new DVI/HDCP compliant products deliver uncompressed, copy-protected, high definition video content through its digital DVI-HDTV interface. The television sets range in size from a 34-inch 16:9 widescreen flat-screen direct-view model in the FD Trinitron® WEGA® series to 51- to 65-inch rear projection widescreen models. "We are pleased to be at the forefront of this new secure format, providing a total HDTV solution through our new compliant products," said Tim Alessi, director of marketing for Sony Electronics' Visual Network Products Company. "With cross industry support of the DVI/HDCP interface, we hope it will bring more high-quality, high-definition content that consumers have been waiting for." DVI/HDCP has garnered cross-industry acceptance and is supported by satellite service providers like DIRECTV, as well as major motion picture studios and other content providers. Sony's 2002 line-up of DVI/HDCP enabled products include 13 new Hi-Scan 1080i television sets and a next-generation HD receiver. The award-winning FD Trinitron WEGA flat-screen direct-view television sets incorporating the new DVI-HDTV interface along with such innovative performance technologies as Digital Reality Creation™ MultiFunction, HD Detailer™, ClearEdge VM™, and a new Memory Stick® media slot include: FD Trinitron WEGA KV-40XBR800 (40-inch, about $3,500), KV-36XBR800 (36-inch, about $2,500), and KV-34XBR800 (34-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $3,000) available this fall, and; FD Trinitron WEGA KV-32HV600 (32-inch, about $2,000), KV-36HS500 (36-inch, about $2,300), and KV-32HS500 (32-inch, about $1,800) available this summer. DVI-HDTV interface incorporated new Hi-Scan 1080i rear-projection television sets featuring DRC™ MultiFunction circuitry, HD Microfocus™ CRT, HD Microfocus lens system and HD Detailer wide band video amp include: KP-57WV700 (57-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $4,200), KP-65WV700 (65-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $4,700) both with the new Uniform Brightness Screen™ technology and Memory Stick media slot available this summer; KP-57WV600 (57-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $3,700), KP-65WV600 (65-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $4,200) both with Memory Stick media slot available this summer, and; KP-51WS500 (51-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $2,700), KP-57WS500 (57-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $3,200), KP-65WS500 (65-inch, 16:9 widescreen, about $3,700) available later this fall. The prototype HD receiver will feature built-in DIRECTV standard definition, DIRECTV HD, all-format ATSC, and NTSC tuners housed in a unique silver chassis to complement Sony's latest line of television sets. Product availability and pricing will be announced this fall. ### I can't believe sony and dtv caved and backed DVI, what punks. I guess you can forget about putting ANYTHING to tape. We can also forget about even WATCHING any HD movies, whether it be through H-DVD, Satellite, or cable, through our non DVI-HDCP equipped HDTV's.

ok, well considering i don't have another 3k to spend on another hdtv, i have a window of two weeks that i can return my sony kp57hw40.....should i return and wait till the new line is available, this fall?
what do you think? to return or not to return, that is the question... thanks, Auk70 |
