Ive just spent the last couple of hours all over the web soaking my brain with this DVI situation. Ive read articles, opinions and facts. First off I'll say I own a Sony Hi-Scan KP-51HW40 and I love it! As most of you know this TV does NOT have DVI inputs. Ive owned this TV for almost a year and are just now learning about this proposed standard. I personally cant understand why this format would become standard for all 1080i signals? I can see how this may be neccsessary for HBO or PPV but all networks? That sounds like blowing up the house to kill the mouse. To my understanding the main objective of this format is to prevent 1080i copies of movies.
True, on paper DVI may produce a slightly better picture quality than component,(most wont even notice) but I feel limiting all 1080i broadcasts to the DVI format, that are not showing marketable movies, is a bit extream. If HBO, Cinamax or whoever whats to protect the movie industry market, then market DVI for those channels. There are many people like myself who purchased a HDTV compatible TV before the introduction of DVI and dont plan on watching HBO or PPV. Im a DVD guy myself, so I feel it would be unfair to loose out on a NBC sitcom in 1080i HD just because Hollywood whats its way the only way. Just my thoughts.

Most people feel that component video inputs will be usable for many years to come.
The DVI/Firewire issue mostly comes into play for recording/copying of signals and how those signals will be "copy protected".
