Optical port on ADV32L1

Hey guys....

I recently have purchased an Advent ADV32L1, and notice that it has the optical port on the back.
I was wondering if it's possible to link 5.1 surround sound to this via that port and watch normal Tv via the 5 speakers as it would be nice to watch the world cup in surround!!

Many thanks in anticipation,

Tom.

I assume that what you mean is "would it be possible to take an optical signal from that port, send it to an A/V receiver which would then decode the DD5.1 and send it to a 5.1 speaker system.

If the original broadcast is DD5.1 and if the internal (digital) tuner of the TV is receiving that programme, then the answer is yes.

See also the HDTV FAQ "What's available in DD5.1".

I just did a search for that TV and then realized that you are in England. I couldn't find a good link for the TV. Is there DD5.1 programming over there?

Hi, thanks for the reply,

I think we do have the Dolby digital 5.1, as I've got a Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5500 set up to my Xbox 360. However, I'm not too fussed about having the signal split between the 5 speakers to create surround, more that I want the speaker linked up to it to have 5 speakers playing the same TV sound.

Is this possible??
many thanks

tom.

I believe that some receivers have a "5 channel stereo" setting, where the same signal is sent to all the speakers (or at least the left and right side). Check the operating manual for your receiver to see if that type of sound mode is listed.

Most receivers will also allow you to seprately adjust the reverb/delay time on the surround speakers and the sound levels. If you adjust the reverb/delay to zero and set the sound level the same for all speakers (while in one of the DSP modes), then you may be able to achieve the same thing. This is separate from setting the speakers up "properly" using the test tones.

The Creative Inspire system may not have these options and you may simply be able to decode the inputs a couple of different ways. If you provide it with a DD5.1 signal, it will provide you with DD5.1. If you give it a stereo signal (DD2.0), then it will decode to Dolby Pro Logic. This may be your best option for any TV programmes.

Visit the Dolby Site for further explanations of these.
