What OTA equipment should I start with?

My house is about five miles from the TV towers all in the same 30 degrees or so to the south. Exposure in that direction is obstructed only by trees. Should I start with simple rabbit ears or do I need something more powerful?

"rabbit ears" are for VHF. First determine the channels your locals broadcast digitally. If they are UHF only, rabbit ears are not going to work effectively.

For UHF... try a Zenith Silver Sensor (@ circuit city ~$40).

At 5 miles... you may get lucky.
