Motorola has only 1 HD box currently available, the 5100.

Here is the link to the user manual:

And here is where I swiped the link from:

This board will not allow links to the other board, but if you go into the address window and delete the asterisks and type the name of the board (hint: see name of link in my above post) it will work.

As for ABC, you will still be able to see ABC in HD through the 5100.

The 5100 provides the option of conversion to 1080i or passing the signal natively if your TV can "accept" 720P.

The SA3100HD boxes to not provide this option, everything is converted to 1080i (some call this "downconversion" since 720P is considered superior by some people, but let's not argue that point here - a full thread was already devoted to that subject).

Here's another link to Motorola boxes, but as Kojak said, only the DCT5100 is used at this time.

Page 20 of the manual states that the user defined output type may be selected from: 1080i, 720p, 480p or 480i.

When you select any output other than 480i, you will see your graphical information (EPG) through component video output only.

Currently the Motorola DCT 5100 allows you to set one resolution for HD and one for non-HD. For example, you can set High Definition to be sent from the STB at 1080i (720p will be converted), and everything else to 480p (480i is converted). Or you can set HD to 720p (1080i is converted) and everything else to 480i.

Hopefully they will release an update that will allow the STB to send HD at its native resolution unless overridden. This way if you TV supports both 720p and 1080i you can let the STB leave ABC at 720p and NBC at 1080i. Then only if your set does not support one of the HD resolution have the STB override to the resolution your TV supports.

This is only useful if you think your set does a better conversion than the STB or if you set natively displays both formats. I don't know of any that natively display both formats please let me know if there are some. For instance my tv accepts both but the final display is always 1080i as it converts all 720p to 1080i so either the 5100 will convert or my tv will convert it.

I wasn't going to bring up the issue, but since sillygoose did, all current CRT-based RPTVs only display 1080i (720P signals get converted to 1080i).

"pixel based" HDTVs like plasma, LCD, DLP only display at 720p (1080i signals are converted to 720P).

I know of only two sets that can do both and they are both very expensive - the new Toshiba LCoS and a Princeton Direct View monitor which costs about twice as much as any comparable unit that only does 1080i.

I know that most HDTV's truly support only one of the resolutions. I can dream however right?

I am saddened that some people are calling there 480p sets HDTV's. I won't name any names but those companies know who they are (Gateway).
