Has any one seen this model yet? Is it worth waiting for compared with other Samsung or Sony models?

All I have seen is the new product announcements that I could get from Google.

I tried to order one from buy.com. They cancelled my order 24 hours later citing inability to fulfill the order. But instead of pulling the product out of their web site, they raised the price by $400.

Definitely is worth it. I was going to purchase the 50" Samsung DLP then saw this bad boy for $1000 less and made my decision. The picture is fantastic, on par with DLP, it looks better stylewise than the DLP and it has more inputs than DLP. I have had mine a grand total of 4 days now and and everybody who has seen it so far has been wowed by it's looks and the picture quality.
Bestbuy has started getting them in ( although not every store has them on display)and they have them side by side with the DLP's. oh, BTW, the unit comes with DVI and RGB cables in the box. Feel free to email me with any and all questions on this unit.

I too have been very intrigued by this set....saw it today at CC. My question is, how close can you sit to this tv? My viewing is virtually all hd or local digital. Today at CC I sat about eight feet from the set and tried to look for the "screen door". I am still undecided about that issue. I WANT to like this tv, and I will be back to compare it again.

If your looking at the panasonic lcd rear projection do not rule out the new Hitachi 50V500 lcd rear projection. I've seen both and I really like the Hitachi better.

Thing is, I work at BB and we get a nice discount on this unit. I really liked the samsung DLP as well but,
1) Our discount on the 50' DLP was discontinued due to customer demand
2) The panny was way cheaper under employee discount
3) The panny had an extra component input as well as extra rgb input.
4)Picture quality was about the same to me. I admit I am not an "audiophile/super-duper tv expert", but after working in the video dept. for a year or so, I am fairly competent (I think...)
I am going into week 2 with unit and I couldn't be happier

Not to get off the subject here, but where did you see the Hitachi LCD? I'm in Tampa also.

Sears has the Hitachi:

Between the Samsung DLP - Panasonic LCD - Sony LCD and Hitachi (50v500) they are all in the same area picture wise. The biggest turnoff on the Hitachi is it doesn't have a RGB Computer input. The panny and hitachi are the most stylus systems.

However today I can't see why anyone would buy a model like these until they see the Philips LCoS systems. To see if they are all that and a bag of chips. There is an online store selling the 55" for $2895 which is an unbelievable buy. We are all waiting to see the bloody things in person, arrive already! Other than the reported great quality I'm drooling over the 1280x1024 computer resolution with 85 hz refresh this thing allows. That to me is exciting on top of everything else.

If that doesn't pan out then Sony or Panasonic most likely. The Samsung's are a little more and I don't see much a dif.

One thing else I got to see today was the new HD-DVD's ($299) using the DVI cable. That gives us another 240 (or so) lines of vertical resolution. I saw this on the Samsungs. Hard to pass that extra bit up. However it wasn't that overly noticeable but heck might as well get the best once we spend this much on a TV.

Haven't heard much lately about the Toshiba LCoS sets. I read on another forum that they had a fair number of problems with them. Also, the less expensive units are 720P I believe, not 1080P, like the "original" $9k model, which now sells for a lot less.

Anyone have any additional information?

HorrorScope. Those are not really HD-DVDs. The DVD players simply deinterlace and/or upconvert to 720P or 1080i. The DVD is still the standard 480i, but if you have a TV that has a DVI connection, the PQ may be a bit better, especially if it's a pixel based TV. It's not HD though.

57U: I meant Philips and I edited as such. About the HD DVD, I hear you, that is the lingo that "they" are using it to describe it.

I heard it gives out more vertical lines of res.. Is that not the case? Is there are good read on these to understand them? Thanks.

We had 3 systems side by side today.

Sony 50 LCD with Progressive Scan
Mitsu Gold+ 55 " with Svidieo
Samsung 45" DLP with the HD931/DVI

To be honest it was somewhat difficult to tell. At times they looked the part but mostly they were all comparable. Now the video was the Lion King so I don't know if animation is a good test or not. All were damn great.

Many HDTVs do a pretty good job of upconversion, therefore it's difficult to say whether it's better to have the TV or the DVD player doing the upconversion.

In the end, the "resolution" you watch is dictated by the native upconverted resolution of the TV, if you start from 480i (remember DVDs are 480i). It's not an easy answer.

Look in the DVD player forum for the various models. Also use the site's search engine using the model number. You should get plenty of hits as some people on this site have these models.

I did look in the other forums as suggested and thanks that helped. Very subjective I see, like most of this... If you got the xtra dollars it makes a nice matching set if nothing else.
