Does the HX (4:3) RPTVs have vertical compression when watching 16:9 material (HD or 480p)? In other words, in the 16:9 window, are all 1080i lines scanned, and with a DVD is all 480p lines scanned in the letterbox?

Provide an exact model number, we'll look at the specs and advise. It usually says pretty early on in the specs if it has it.

Type "manufacturer, model#" into a web search engine and you'll usually get a few hits, usually with specs.

The exact model numbers are
PT56HX41 and PT61HX42

I checked the Panny web site, but found no specific answer.
I also e-mailed the site for an answer

I checked both models and could see no mention of vertical compression. I've found vertical compression more often in the direct view sets. Not much on RPTVs.

Here's a sample link I found.

A few years ago, there were lots of 4:3 RPTVs with few 16:9. This year there are very few 4:3 models left. I doubt there'll be any next year. If you feel this is a good deal and you want a 4:3 set, go ahead. If you're in doubt, you may wish to wait a short while, or consider a widescreen HDTV.
