i ran optic cable to my mits 55411 and thought that the picture quality increases thus changing the 480i to higher. Is that incorrect???

Huh???.
Optic cable doesn't carry video, it carries audio! Do you have a progressive scan DVD player? On some TVs you don't notice much difference between 480i and 480P input to the TV. Your video signals are probably being sent via component video cables? All HDTVs will "upconvert" 480i. What it upconverts to, depends on the model, but it should go to 480P at least. Some TVs go to 540P or 1080i.
