Love my 51"
Anyone looking for a good HD "ready" set, go with this one. Initially I had problems with the guns "diverging", but after about a week of break in, it became stable. Picture is excellent. Plenty of features. Although you typically pay a little more for the Sony name, I feel that this one was worth it. Just my 2 cents!

I've been looking at that set. I've seen it at several stores and it seems to have an excellent picture. But, the image is always either an HDTV signal or from a progressive scan DVD. I've read in several forums that when you view regular DTV 4:3 signals it's not that good.....something to do with the way Sony does their line doubling. When you watch normal DTV or cable programming, how do you find the picture quality? Thanks for any info...

running off of cable (non-digital), there are good days and bad. I don't know why, the cable guy told me I had plenty of signal, but it seems like there are times where motion is actually blurry on certain channels (cbs for one). DVD wise, the picture is excellent with my old hitachi. Digital, non HDTV, broadcasts come in okay, but they are up-converted (not sure of actual term) to digital so you can't expect it to be great. I don't have DirecTV connected up yet so I can't comment on that. When you are about 8 to 10 feet from the set, the picture looks great, pretty much no matter what input. Take my recommendation/info. with a grain of salt, I am no expert, just a slightly better than average educated user. I am sure there are plenty of sets out there that are better. |

I have this set as well. Running it with AT&T Broadband digital cable. As mentioned, I have my good and bad days, but for the most part the picture is pretty good (like everyone says...garbage in garbage out).
I had the same concern being that when I saw the TV at Tweeters, Best Buy and Circuit City, the satellite and regualr cable feeds looked terrible. I think this has to do with the fact that they split the connections between a ton of sets and lose signal in the process. DVD looks great and if you feel comfortable tweaking the set in the service mode, you can further tune the picture to your liking (you can really screw it up, too if you are not careful!) I hate to bring this up, but my only concern is the new sets that will be coming out with a DVI input. There is a lot of speculation about this issue and it may turn out to be nothing, but there is always the chance that you may miss out on some future features/functionality if DVI/HDCP take off. Who knows, maybe it is better to live in the present. |
