Panasonic 53 Inch Widescreen HDTV

I am looking at buying the Panasonic 53 inch Widescreen HDTV Monitor in a couple weeks. It's the newest version of it with a model # of PT-53WX53. The price is reasonable and the set has everything I want, including a DVI Input. Does anyone have this tv, and can you comment on it? Thanks.

I have the last years version of the model you are looking at. Its a quite popular set. It has great PQ when tweaked. Its easily tweakable thru service menu. The non-linear stretch mode is pretty good. I watch regular tv on it regularly. I have had no problems at all.
And the model that you are looking at comes with DVI and 720p support according to Panasonics website. Mine doesnt have those 2 features that I listed, which is what I would want if I were buying a TV today.
Panasonic does have good customer support. Atleast in my experience.

I haven't seen a retailer like Best Buy or Circuit City that has had 720p on the spec list, but that site above is directly to panasonic's homepage and spec list of this tv. Go over and take a look. It says it supports 480/720/1080.. So who knows. I don't have it yet, but will in 2 weeks or so.

Regarding 720P on this TV.

No native support and no upscale to 1080i. I've had this TV for about a month now. WAYYYY too much red on non component inputs. DVD's look pretty good. If you plan on watching alot of SDTV, you'll probably be majorly disappointed.

No upscale from 720p to 1080i? I asked the exact same question yesterday. I have a 2001 Panasonic 47 inch WS and it supports 480p and 1080i only. I asked if I would get any benefit from a 720p broadcast at all (ABC's standard). I was told that the STB would convert the 720p up to 1080i. Was I told wrong?

The STB (set top box) will convert incoming 720P (ABC) to 1080i. You were not told wrong. This has nothing to do with the TV, however, which doesn't apparently accept 720P.

Gotcha. The TV won't upconvert anything, but the STB will.

So ...let me see if I understand this 720p and 1080i issue. The PT-53WX53 will not up-convert a 720p signal to 1080i ...but what will it do if it were fed a 720p signal? Will it down-convert the signal to 480p? ...or will it just explode in a huge fire ball?

It will have a blank screen. Your STB will take the 720p signal and convert to 1080i. Unless you want to shell out big bucks, don't worry about it. This 720p vs 1080i is not an issue.

I think the fireball would be cool to see though..
