DVI HDCP and the FCC
What is the FCC's opinion on DVI and HDCP ? I went to there website and couldn't find any information except something headed "copy protection" the caption talked about Disneys Eisner, I couldn't get it to download.

The short answer to this question is that the FCC does not really care at all about HDCP. In fact, all the FCC seems to want is to phase out the OTA system, and so they view DVI and HDMI as the future. However, to make this happen, they need friends in high places. Therefore, they are seeking to appease influential institutions such as the MPAA in order to mandate DVI and HDMI using HDCP. The MPAA wants HDCP so that copyrights can be protected. In the end, it all comes back to politics and beaurocracy.

I agree with Covetous3 assesment.
Only one good thing FCC has said about HDCP. OTA transmissions will never be protected by HDCP. This includes network broadcasts that are retransmitted by cable or sat. So Alias on ABC will be free of HDCP regardless if you watch it OTA, cable or sat. As for non network content (HBO, CNN, MTV, etc) the FCC just wants them to put as much content out in HD. The content owners balked at idea since HD is flawless and unprotected. So FCC doesn't really seem to like HDCP but it will let them use HDCP as compramise to get more HD content. More HD content means more HDTVs. More HDTVs means the FCC can declare analog dead, kill analog spectrum and resell it. |
