Hi!
Yes, the 6208 will initially be launched in 2 locations: California and Atlantic Division in November. Shortly after that, it should be available throughout Comcast...

Cost?
I'm renting the 5100 for $5.00 a month. Any idea what the new one will cost?

I'm a fairly new to this board and I'm a little confused on the Comcast hardware you guys are talking about. I own a Mitsubishi 65909 (Diamond Series) tv. I was one of the first to receive the Comcast HD service (last year) in my area. They do not charge me an additional fee for this cable box. All they did was switch the normal digital cable box to this new one with the HD 1080i connections that go into my tv. My tv is HD-READY (as opposed to HD-UPGRADEABLE). Is there an additional piece of equipment that Comcast rents out that for people who do not have a HD-READY tv? Or is there only one piece of hardware/cable box that works with either tv? I am interested in getting a DVR in the future but I'm fairly new to all this information. If someone could clear up my confusion I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks |

Comcast boxes
The Comcast box most of us have now (the Motorola 5100) contains within it an HD converter, so those of us who have HD-ready TVs (without an integrated HD tuner, that is) do not have to buy a separate HD tuner to receive HD channels. I'm not sure if you needed this box or not, but since its working and they aren't charging you for it, obviously its not a problem!:p
As for the Motorola 6208 that people are discussing above, I think that may be a new HD box with HD tuner and recorder (like Tivo) built in, but I'm not certain (but if I'm right, I'm certainly interested). Hope that helps.

Ready to launch in Sacramento
It looks like Comcast is ready to launch the 6208 in the Sacramento area.

It also looks like I'll have to wait a while, not only for Comcast to offer this box farther south here in Tracy, CA, but also for the dual-tuner HD/DVR box. I'm in no rush, however, since I'm still enjoying the fact that I have HD programming in the first place. However, once that newer model comes out next year, I'll definitely upgrade my box.

Can anyone find when the 6208 will be rolled out in the Chicago market? Also what is the point of rolling this one out if it only has one tuner, meaning that you can't record and watch a different channel at the same time.....

I think there is TONS of upside.
First, there is ease of use. Nothing to program, no tapes to fiddle with- it is a snap, particularly for the VCR-programming-challenged. Next is the ability to pause and rewind live TV. Awesome feature. And then there is the one thing that I don't hear anyone talking about: Picture Quality!! I know when I tape my NASCAR races, the PQ is awful. No such problem with DVR. PLUS, I can record HD! Who else offers that right now? And if you are in an SA system, you have dual-tuner already (albeit, no HD recording yet).

Good points.....I am unable to get any info form the Chicago reps on this subject though. I spoke to supervisors, tech people and sales reps still nothing. Do you have any info on the chicago market. We curretly use MOT STB so i assume that they will stick with MOT and not SFA.

Chester County, PA Update
I have talked to Comcast in Newark, Del and their region does not have units for Chester, Bucks and Deleware counties as yet. They said Philadelphia customers do have these new Moto boxes...but that there is no word when they will be available to all of us who have been waiting so long in this area controlled from the Newalk, Del office.

Iam I right though with Comcast for now you are not using TWO boxes are you? Insight has allways been two boxes if you want HD. Still some issues mine freezes up about every other day I have to unlug it then it is ok. Trido |

In addition to the points already made, you can watch a recorded program while it's recording live tv. This is a huge advantage! I've been a TiVo owner for years, and I can tell you that you probably won't watch much live tv after you get a pvr. Sports might be an exception. |
