will hi def satellite receiver help with non-def tv?

Help - I just purchased a Panasonic plasma tv (non-hi def) and want to sign up for DirecTV satellite. Two sales people told me to upgrade and buy a hi-def receiver ($500 to $1,100!) as it will improve my tv picture. Two other sales people told me it wouldn't make a difference and just to get the regular receiver that DirecTV supplies. I'd spend the extra money if I thought it would improve the picture. Does anyone know about this? Thank you!
