Problem with HD PVR
Everyone is talking about the new HDTV PVR coming out in the spring.
Well its already out in Japan for well over a thousand dollars. The big problem is that a 100 gig. hard drive can only record 8 hrs of HD programs gkwizard |

The DVR-921 a lot of us have been discussing is from Dish Network. 250gb 25hours hd. Its release has been moved back to Dec 1, 2003 (soon). Two satellite tuners and an OTA tuner, can record and two sources while you watch one.

I think you will find that the 921 will record 2 programs while letting you watch a 'previously recorded' program. This is quite different from recording 2 programs while watching a 3rd 'live' program. Also, if it only has one OTA tuner, won't you be able to record only 1 OTA HD channel at a time? I was under the impression at one time that it had 2 HD tuners, both with integrated OTA tuners. This would allow you to record any combination of 2 programs, no?

It has two satellite tuners and one OTA tuner. You can record a combination of any two while watching the third. Record two sat channels and watch OTA or record one sat and the OTA and watch the other sat (all in HD). That was my understanding Early on we have a reference to being able to record all three, of course watching none, but it turned out to be false. I guess we will really find out when they release the dang thing.I'm checking the links again, I've been wrong before ![]() Lee edit: Are we saying the same thing? I still have quite woken up yet ![]() DVR Features - 250 GIG Hard Drive for recording both Standard and High Definition Programming. - 25 hours HDTV Recording - 180 hours Standard Definition Recording - Records Dolby Digital (when available) and off-air broadcasts - Record 2 Watch 1, Including Either OTA or Satellite - Pause live TV - Skip forward 30 seconds - Skip back 10 seconds - 4 fast-forward and 4 reverse speeds (4x, 15x, 60x, 300x) - Slow motion and frame-by-frame Last edited by LeeS : 11-23-2003 at 11:07 PM. |

Less,
I'm aware of that link and those specs, but here's another link to a pdf of specs that says record 2 live while watching a 3rd previously recorded. I believe you will find that even though there are technically 3 tuners (2 HD and 1 OTA), you will also find that only 2 can be 'active' at the same time (dual-tuner, PIP, recording and all that). But, like you said, we may not know for sure until it is released. ![]()

I think that is how it may be . I called Dish Tech Support and they didn't think we could record OTA HD. All the adds on the net seem to indicate we can.The tech support guy did say that they hadn't gotten a 921 to play with so he was not absolutely sure. Lee |
