Much searching has finally paid off. There is a way to record HD from sat to a DVHS recorder! Go to 169time.com

See this thread from April 2002, and several thereafter. Be careful as this only works with certain STBs. Also, with the "real" STB for Sat & Cable only a few weeks/months away, this may not be the way you want to go, especially at the price.
