How good are these DVD calibration products on front projectors?I’d be interested in knowing if any of you had used these products on your front projectors, and if you noticed a mark improvement.

Ditto on the question. I would imagine it is just as important as for a RPTV.

Haven't done mine with Avia yet. My projector came setup out of the box, just lowered the contrast a little. The reviews also said that it was pretty good to go out of the box.

I should put the Avia on it right away but I've been enjoying HD and DVDs too much

I ran Avia on my projector. The 'contrast' test for non CRT type displays was very good. Dialed right in, actually 45 vs the 50 factory setting.

Brightness stayed at 50, right on the money.

Color and Tint, also no adjustment. 50/50. Color decoder tests were perfect.

They weren't kidding when they (reviewers) said it was good out of the box.

Basically I found it was as easy or easier to calibrate than my RPTV was. They don't use the 'blooming' test for the non CRT displays to set the contrast. That was the only real difference and the only real complaint I had about the Avia DVD. (probably true of the other DVD's also)

The lamp in my MT8 has over 500 hours on it now. For some time now I've noticed on some movies with very bright scenes that the PQ was off some, washed out in the bright areas.

Ran the Avia again and found I had to lower the contrast and brightness to get it in calibration. PQ is excellent again, strange how things can creep up on you.

I did the original calibration when the unit was new, I did let it run for over an hour before calibrating it. I guess I should have rechecked the calibration after the lamp broke in.

Six months sure has gone by quickly . Damn, its almost the 4th of July!

I purchased my FP back in October and I only have 361 hrs on it. At least it’s been 361 trouble free hrs. Haven’t noticed any brightness issues. Did have an episode were the lamp refused to start on the first attempt and had to recycle the power switch. My heart felt like it was going to stop, but luckily it started right back up.

I agree with you on things tending to creep up on you. I never imagined seeing HDTV much less owning a home FP.

I'm having trouble calibrating my NEC LT240K DLP projector. I have a Da-Lite screen and using Onkyo progressive DVD player. Problems: Artifacts within the picture. In dark scenes can see artifacts (dots) in day light scenes, can be noticeable. I've adjusted numerous times the brightness, contrast, Hue, and color but can't seem to get it right. I've also borrowed my buddy's DVE calibration, and using the color strips doesn't work on the Da-lite screen. Seems that DVE is only for CRT televisions. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Humm?…..Not sure if I understand your explanation. Are you watching a dark scene when you notice dots? Might be macroblocking that you are witnessing due in part to the performance of your dvd player or perhaps part of the MPEG video frame is allowing multiple bit errors during the source playback. Is this only present during dvd playback or is it always noticible regardless of the type of input signal.




DVE can be used on front projectors. What prevented you from using the color pattern for this calibration? You might not get it 100% but you should be able to get it pretty close. It’s all dependent on the quality of your color decoder. What exactly did you experience when adjusting the color and tint settings?

Ditto on the DVE. I've used Avia on my FP with excellent results. The gentleman who did the ISF calibration on my FP used an Avia just like mine.

BTW, I am also using a Da-Lite screen.

Are these 'sparlking little spots' that appear ramdomly all over the screen?

A DVI/HDMI cable that is not up to the task can cause that to happen.

Yes....those spots appear randomly but mostly on dark scenes. I'm using component video out to RGB in cable. How did you adjust the color using the color strip? Did you just eyeball it?

Describe the spots. Are these spots only noticeable during DVD playback? If so you might be able to narrow down the culprit. I don’t think these spots are a result of the color decoder. But here is the method using DVE.

You need to have the color filters that came with the DVE dvd so you can look at the color bar pattern thru the filters as you adjust the color and tint setting on your projector. You should be able to get it fairly close to the pictures in the above link.

These spots are actually dots when a dark scene is displayed, you can actually see the dots appear. It almost seem that the projector can't determine the black color?
Thanks for the link to calibrate using DVE. The tip did help, but not sure how to use the color strip. When I have the color bars up and putting the color strip on the da-lite screen, I can't really see the correct color throught the color strip. I hope that makes sense???

Just a thought,

Where are you sitting when you are trying to use the blue color strip? Normal seating position I hope. Definitely not up against the screen.

You are trying to set the color and tint with the blue strip?

Better yet, drop into the chatroom for a bit, I'm there now and we can get this ironed out for you.
