HDMI vs. DVI

I have been reading about the new Hughes HD PVR250 (TIVO)due out next month. From what I can tell, this new unit doesn't have the DVI output. It has something called HDMI (High Def Multimedia Interface). Is this better than the DVI connections? Does it have anything to do with path between the DVR and the TV? Any help with this subject will be greatly appricated.

HDMI is the next step up from DVI. It can transmit both digital audio and video. And it is backwards compatible with DVI. So if you have a DVI Tv and HDMI STB you can connect both. HDMI is a more compact connector than DVI.

Check this out. http://www.hdmi.com

There are already some HD sets that have HDMI instead of DVI. More will probably follow.

My Hitachi 65S700 has two ieee1394 jacks. Is this where the HDMI connection would be? I don't see any connections on the back of the set marked for HDMI. It does have the DVHDTV connection. If the ieee1394 jacks are not for the HDMI connection, am I out of luck. Would that leave me only the RCA cords to connect theHughes HDTV TIVO unit to my TV? I've have been looking for site that shows the back of the TIVO unit, but no luck.

The s700 has a DVI port and you would need a HDMI to DVI cable.
