Smile NTSC signal viewing quality and model "phase-out"

I am looking into puchasing the KP-51HW40, but have a couple of concerns. Firstly, most stores tell me that this model is about to be discontinued and the newer ones should hit the stores by beginning of September. I have been thinking whether there are improvements in the components and quality of the new sets that I might miss out on if I buy the older sets now. Strangely, the new sets have the same model number and nobody has been able to tell me what the differences will be.

Secondly, I have been concerned about the clarity(picture quality) of the regular broadcasts via cable that I will be viewing quite a lot. I do not plan to get a digital tuner/decoder until later. Some postings on this chatboard have suggested a degradation in the so-called 'upconversion' from regulat NTSC to digital.

Any light shed in this regard would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
