DVD Player

I am looking into getting a new DVD player, but don't quite understand a few things. I have a Sony amp that decodes Dolby 5.1 with optical and coaxial digital inputs.

1) Does the DVD player have to have Dobly 5.1 outputs? or

2) Can the DVD player 'pass through' the Dolby 5.1 if it has coaxial and digital outputs?

3) Does the DVD player have to have a Dolby 5.1 decoder since my amp has that?

I would appreciate any and all help!

YOu want a DVD player with either optical or coax digital output. This will pass the DD5.1 and DTS bitstream to the receiver that will decode for you (which 99.9% of DVD players do). YOu do not need a DVD player that decodes.

Outputs

Thank you very much. I would like to say that I am starting to get a handle on this, but who knows?

I read somewhere that the 5 outputs + sub is for analog use and that the digital is for digital (DVD?) use. This is quite unclear, but maybe it doesn't have to be.

Thank you for all your help!

The five multichannel outputs are analog and are for either...
DVD players that have an internal DD or DTS decoder that you can feed to an amp (that doesn't do DD/DTS or the decoder in the DVD player is better). Or... if the DVD player is DVD-A or SACD you must use these outputs to go to an amp.

Anyway... for 'normal' DVD video and DD/DTS, the digital optical or coax goes to the reciever (that's DD/DTS capable) and you're done! (Just be sure to set the DVD players audio output to 'bitstream').
