1080i vs 720p
1080i vs 720p wich one is considered higher quality. Also how do most tv's handle 720p when they only except 1080i or 420p, do they down convert it to 720p or is it different from company to company

This is a debatable subject - the general consensus is that 720p is better for fast-motion (sporting events, etc.) and 1080i is better forimages in which a lot of movement is not involved.
My personal opinion is that it doesn't matter much which format is broadcast - both can look stunningly good. What possibly does matter is how a TV set or other video display deals with the different scanning formats. The conversion of one format to another is done at the discretion (not to mention technical expertise) of each manufacturer. I think that the best advice that I could possibly give would be to FUGGITABOUDIT! Don't agonize or lose any sleep at all over it. Leave the nitpicking to others - it's just not worth your time or trouble. Hope this helps you

sorry I meant to ask if 720p was down converted to 420p (not 720p) when the tv only excepts 1080i or 420p

I've never ever heard of a down-conversion of 720p to 420p (or 480p either), although I suppose that there are TV sets in the lower price brackets that might do such a thing if their maximum scanning frequency is <>31.5K.
In all sets claiming to be HDTV capable that don't display 720p "natively" (meaning not converted to anything different), the conversion of 720p would invariably be up converted to 1080i rather than down converted to any lesser scanning format. Why are you so focused on this issue?

Technically 720p is better than 1080i.
As to do you need a TV that shows 720p natively consider this-Only ABC Broadcast 720p all other HD broadcast are in 1080i. If the TV you want displays 720p that's a bonus, most don't. |
