Unhappy What do I need for HD viewing?

I just recently bought a Sony KP-51HW40 HDTV capable or ready. They forgot to put "Picture will not be close in quality at home compared to in store!" Basically, I'm not getting HD quality pictures on the my basic cable service. They want me to go back and subscribe to their DirecTV service for HD quality (this is a last option). What can I do to get HD quality on my HDTV-"READY" set?

Please help. Thanks.

You won't get HD quality on anything unless it's HD! DVD's will look a lot better, but SD stuff from cable or satellite may look worse.

The only way to get HD from cable is to subscribe to HD if your cable provider provides HD programming! Usually the cable company will provide/rent you and HD converter.

Or... but an STB to get digital/HD off the air (OTA) or sateliite. They are they only options.

Sorry to say, either you didn't do your homework or you were misled by your friendly TV salesperson.

Recommendations on STB

Thanks, I realize I didn't do enough studying before buying but as it is, I want to be able to get HD through my cable service. You mentioned the use of a Set Top Box, I assume this is an HD converter? Where can I get one of these boxes and would you know if it will work with Time Warner Cable in Houston? Is the HD converter the only thing I would need?

Thanks.

An STB is a receiver/tuner. Only the Samsumg has an STB that is OTA only. All others will decode satellite and OTA (Hughes, Toshiba, RCA, etc). STB's can be purchased online, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

and would you know if it will work with Time Warner Cable in Houston?
No, most cable companies use a different modulation for HD.
Satellite uses a different modulation and OTA uses still a different modulation.

Is the HD converter the only thing I would need?
YOu need a BOX of one type or another to decode HD whether it it cable, satlellite or OTA.

Thanks. [/B]
