question concerning cables

If I have the red/blue/green cables going from my HDTV to my DVD player, do I still need an S video cable in order to get a progreesive scan picture from my dvd player? I had both hooked up, and the picture was scrambled when it was on progressive scan.

I called Samsung, and they said that I only need one or the other, so I took the S video cable off, and it allowed me to turn on the Progressive scan feature on my dvd player. The picture was no longer scrambled, but, to be honest, I didn't see a big difference btw a non progressive picture and a progressive picture. (both looked very good to me)

Problem is, now the picture is scrambled again when I turn on the progressive scan feature. (it only worked for a short time).

SO, my questions are:
-What is the correct cable hookup, AND
-Is progressive scan NOTICABLY different, and worth the trouble when I am happy with my picture to begin with?

Thanks in advance.

Just component

Samsung's right. You only need to use one or the other, although component connections (red blue green) are generally seen as superior to S-Video. I don't know why you are getting a scrambled picture.

Regarding progressive scan, it probably is not a noticable difference. Most HDTV's have line doubler's that, in effect, gives you progressive scan even without a progressive scan DVD player. If your TV's line doubler is better than the one in the DVD player, you won't notice any difference. This applies to low-end progressive scan DVD players in the $200-300 range and thereabouts. With better ones, some people do notice an improvement.

It's my understanding that you can't get a progressive scan picture using s-video. You need to use component video.
